Centric Diatom Algae of Volcanic Verkhneavachinsk Lakes (Kamchatka).

Eleven representatives of diatom algae of the class Centrophyceae from the genera Aulacoseira (1), Conticribra (1), Cyclotella (5), Discostella (1), Stephanodiscus (2), Thallasiosira (1) are found in the phytoplankton of 5 volcanic lakes (Bakening volcano, Kamchatka). A new for the science species, Stephanodiscus popovskayae, discovered in all the lakes, and a new for the flora of Russia species, Cyclotella gordonensis, is found only in three lakes. The closest similarity in the composition of centric diatoms is revealed between the lakes of a single water system – Lake Medvezh’ye and Lake Verkhneavachinskoye.

The Species Composition and Distribution of Ostracods (Crustacea, Ostracoda) in Rockpools of the Kandalaksha Bay in the White Sea.

A total of 15 species of ostracods from seven genera and three families of the suborder Podocopa Sars were recorded in rockpools of the Kandalaksha Bay of the white Sea. Among them Potamocypris pallida Alm is a new species for the fauna of Russia. The data on species composition, the dominating complex and ecological features of ostracods inhabiting waters of rockpools are presented.

Metacercariae of New Species of Trematodes of the Genus Diplostomum (Trematoda, Diplostomidae) from Fishes of Lake Tana, Ethiopia.

Four new species of metacercariae trematodes of the genus Diplostomum are described in fishes of Lake Tana in Ethiopia: Diplostomum garrae sp. n. from the lens of Garra dembecha, D. longicollis sp. n. from the lens of Barbus humilis, D. montanum sp. n. from the lens of Barbus humilis and D. tilapiae sp. n. from the vitreous body of eyes of Oreochromis niloticus. Metacercariae of new species differ from all known Holarctic species by morphology (D. garrae and D. longicollis especially) and size. It is the first record of metacercariae in fish in Africa of the genus Diplostomum.

Anoxygenic Phototrophic Bacteria from Gypsum Karst Lakes of Lithuania.

The ecological features of sulfatic karst lakes in Lithuania represent favourable conditions for the development of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria, which play a crucial role in biogeochemical sulfur and carbon cycles; however the bacterial communities of such lakes are not well studied so far. The aim of this study was to investigate midsummer spatial distribution of bacteria and composition of anoxygenic colour phototrophic bacteria in enriched bacterial communities from different depths of karst lakes Kirkilai and Ramunelis by using spectrophotometric analysis, microbiological and molecular methods. In Lake Kirkilai, the highest bacterial abundance was measured in the metalimnion and near the bottom (up to 10.7 · 10⁶ cell mL), in Lake Ramunelis – in the anoxic hypolimnion (up to 22.4 · 10⁶ cell mL). The pigment analysis of phototrophic purple and green sulfur bacteria showed the domination of green sulfur bacteria in enrichment culture. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA genes confirmed the presence of Chlorobium sp. and Ch. limicola in enrichment cultures for green sulfur bacteria from metalimnion of lakes Kirkilai and Ramunelis, respectively, while purple non-sulfur bacteria of the genus Rhodopseudomonas dominated in enrichment culture for purple sulfur bacteria from Lake Kirkilai near-bottom layer.

Seasonal and interannual dynamics of phytoplankton of the Yenisei River in the Area of the "Gremyachiy Log" waterworks.

A total of 81 taxa of algae of the rank below the genus of five divisions were recorded in phytoplankton composition in the phytoplankton composition in the Yenisey River in the area of Gremyachiy Log water intake facilities. Diatom algae dominate in the structure of algocenoses by abundance and biomass. The trophic state of the area estimated according to the average biomass of phytoplankton 1.92 ± 0.09 mg/l corresponds to the mesotrophic state, the water quality corresponds to the third class as "satisfactory clean".

Bacterio- and zooplankton in the Tributary of the plain reservoir under abnormal climatic conditions.

Three zones in the plain reservoir were distinguished according to electrical conductivity of water. They are an inflow transition zone, a frontal zone and a transition zone of the water inlet. By the presence of the edge effect the frontal zone in the outfall part is considered as ecotone. The buffer capacity of ecotone promotes the reduction of the zooplankton response to the increase in water temperature in abnormally hot year.

Invertebrate Drift in the Piedmont Part of the Kedrovaya River (Primorsky Region, Russia) in Warm Season.

Diurnal dynamics of invertebrate drift in the Kedrovaya River (Primorsky region, Russia), which flows in the zone of influence of the monsoon climate, has been studied. It has been shown that drifting invertebrates tend to shift from predominantly daytime drift pattern to distinguished nocturnal drift pattern during frost-free period. The ratio of total number of nighttime migrants to total number of daytime migrants increased with every subsequent month. It has been proposed that the degree of light contrast between day and night can be significant in the regulation of the intensity of nocturnal drift.

Biology and Production of Mass Species of Chironomids in the Rybinsk Reservoir.

The biology, distribution and production of the following four mass species of chironomids from the shallow zone of the Rybinsk Reservoir are studied: Chironomus agilis Shobanov et Djomin, Ch. muratensis Ryser et al., Lipiniella araenicola Shilova and Stictochironomus crassiforceps (Kieffer). Although the studied species differ greatly in life cycles, production, of trophy level habitats, duration and rate of growth, their average P/Baverage-coefficients change slightly from 2.9 to 3.4, P/Bmax – from 1.4 to 1.6. The mean values ​​of P/Baverage = 3.0 and P/Bmax = 1.5 are recommended for calculating the production of monocyclic chironomid species in fresh waters, while determining their fish productivity or assessing losses associated with dredging.

Molluscs in the Zoobenthos of Relict Lake with Anomally High Biological Productivity on the East European Subarctic.

The structure of mollusc assemblages in the large tundra lake system in the eastern part of Northern European Russia was investigated (Vashutkiny lakes, Bolshezemelskaya Tundra). These lakes are comparable to northern boreal lakes by mollusc species diversity and population density levels. Two hypotheses suggested by Zvereva were analyzed: 1) the relict origin of these lakes ecosystem; 2) the leading role of intrazonal factors in the formation of their abnormally high level of biological productivity. Both hypotheses are confirmed by new data. The basis of the productivity of lakes is their flow-through regime, which provides intensive convective heat exchange of water masses with lakes suprapermafrost taliks and leads to the accumulation of summer heat in Quaternary sediments, widespread in the lake depressions. Intensive water exchange along with a strong wind mixing prevents the stratification of the water masses.

Changes in Zooperiphyton Structure of a Small River Along Spatial Gradients

Of 165 zooperiphyton taxa found in the Sestra River, chironomid larvae (40), nematodes (24) and oligochaetes (21) have the highest richness. The increase in taxonomic richness of zoocenoces from the river head to its mouth is weakly expressed. The highest diversity of zoocenoces is recorded within contact zones of the river water with its tributaries and receiving waters. Discreteness of spatial characteristics of zooperiphyton taxonomic composition reflects heterogeneity and diversity of invertebrate habitats. By its effect, anthropogenic pollution can exceed the impact of environmental factors, including current velocities influencing the formation of rheophilic communities and river ecosystems. All the descovered groups of invertebrates are represented in the dominant complexes of zooperiphyton. Among them the third group of detritophages-collectors is characterized by the highest taxonomic diversity. The first trophic group (phytodetritophages-filtrators+collectors) is represented mainly by chironomid larvae p. Chironomus, that are opted for the most polluted zones. Invertebrate-filtrators – sponges and bryozoans which feed on natural forage organisms – develop in zooperiphyton mainly in the lower reaches of the river beyond the areas affected by pollution.

Influence of Macrophytes on the Activity of Digestive Enzymes in Fish Intestinal Mucosa.

It is shown that the presence of leaves of macrophytes, which are the part of aquatic and littoral vegetation, in fish diet, usually stimulates the activity of glycosidases, but has little effect on the activity of proteases of its intestinal mucosa. In the presence of extracts of leaves of the same species of macrophytes enzyme activity of both chains is reduced. The mechanisms of the influence of macrophyte leaves and their extracts on the activity of digestive hydrolases and, consequently, the efficiency of the initial stages of assimilation of the carbohydrate and protein components of fish food are discussed.

The Effect of Zinc Nano-, Microparticles and Ions on Freshwater Hydrobionts of Different Trophic Levels.

Data on the effect of different forms of zinc compounds on biological parameters of freshwater hydrobionts (Ceriodaphnia affinis Lillijeborg, 1862, Chironomus riparius Meigen, 1804, Brachydanio rerio Hamilton-Buchanan, 1822) are presented. Among used test-objects the most sensetive is Ceriodaphnia affinis.

Growth of Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus Peters) Chronically Exposed to Cadmium, Naphthalene and DDVP.

Chronic effects of cadmium, naphtalene and DDVP upon growth of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus Peters) exposed to equitoxic concentrations corresponding to 1/30 LC₅₀ for 24 h (cadmium and DDVP) and 1/15 LC50 for 24 h (naphtalene) were studied. The fish were kept in toxicant solutions for 60 days and then for 60 more days in clear water. It was found that studied toxicants affected fish growth indices to varying extents. Organic compounds had no significant effects upon linear and mass growth of tilapia. Cadmium has caused the strongest suppression of tilapia’s growth and toxic effect of this metal was irreversible – all fish died after transfer to clean water.
